Georgian President denounces BBC for “completely unverified” claims

(MENAFN) Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili sharply criticized the BBC for airing what he described as “completely unverified” accusations claiming that authorities used a chemical agent to disperse anti-government demonstrations last year, according to reports from national media on Tuesday.

He argued that “such a well-known media outlet as the BBC” should not engage in reporting that could “harm our country,” stressing deep disappointment over the issue.

Kavelashvili compared the situation to former complaints made by US President Donald Trump, who had accused the BBC of spreading “disinformation” about him. He also drew parallels with earlier allegations involving ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili, recalling that “The BBC, CNN and other outlets, through their lobbying companies, hired medical experts to create a media boom, as if the Georgian government was poisoning Saakashvili,” as he put it.

The president pointed out that Konstantine Chakhunashvili, the pediatrician featured in the BBC’s investigation, now maintains that he “never discussed that substance” referenced in the report.

Kavelashvili urged the public to await the results of the official inquiry, insisting that the government intends to act responsibly. He called on law enforcement to conduct a full and detailed probe and questioned who might be “behind these coordinated actions,” noting how various media organizations, NGOs, and political groups appear to be responding “in one voice” before any facts are confirmed.

Earlier the same day, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze alleged that the BBC had been intentionally fed fabricated material designed to damage Georgia’s national interests. He said the broadcaster was given false claims that “a certain substance had been used,” characterizing the information as a deliberate lie.

Kobakhidze added that any punitive measures proposed on the basis of “such falsehoods” would be entirely baseless.
