Georgian President Criticizes BBC for Claims on Protest Crackdown

(MENAFN) Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili criticized the BBC for airing “completely unverified” claims regarding the alleged use of a chemical agent to suppress anti-government demonstrations last year, according to a Georgian broadcaster on Tuesday.

“It is very unfortunate that such a well-known media outlet as the BBC allows itself to broadcast completely unverified information and harm our country,” he stated, expressing his disapproval of the network’s reporting.

Kavelashvili drew a comparison to US President Donald Trump’s grievances with the BBC over purported “disinformation” concerning himself.

“I will draw a parallel — we saw a similar situation regarding (former Georgian President) Mikheil Saakashvili. The BBC, CNN and other outlets, through their lobbying companies, hired medical experts to create a media boom, as if the Georgian government was poisoning Saakashvili,” he remarked, recalling past incidents where international media coverage stirred controversy.

The president also highlighted that Konstantine Chakhunashvili, the pediatrician involved in the BBC investigation, now asserts that he “never discussed that substance” in any context.

“Let’s wait for the investigation. We are a responsible government. I call on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate,” Kavelashvili emphasized, suggesting that it is important to determine who is “behind these coordinated actions.”

He further questioned the rapid consensus among media organizations, NGOs, and political groups: “How is it that media outlets, NGOs and political parties speak in one voice, without waiting for facts, immediately attacking the state?”
