Ohio Man Faces Charges for Threatening Vice President J.D. Vance
Authorities say Shannon Mathre, a resident of Toledo, was apprehended by US Secret Service officers on February 6 for “making a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon, a successor to the presidency.”
The alleged threats were made ahead of a scheduled visit by the vice president to Ohio. The indictment states that Mathre planned to track Vance’s movements and use an M14 rifle to carry out the attack.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche added that the arrest revealed Mathre also possessed child sexual abuse material.
If found guilty, Mathre could face a maximum of five years in prison for the threat charge, while the possession of child sexual abuse material carries a possible sentence of up to 20 years.
“Our attorneys are vigorously prosecuting this disgusting threat against Vice President Vance,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said.
Reports indicate that the United States has experienced rising political hostility and violence in recent years, with both Republicans and Democrats pointing fingers over escalating tensions.
Last month, another individual, William DeFoor, was charged with damaging Vance’s Cincinnati residence. The vice president described the incident, saying a “crazy person” attempted to break in, “hammering the windows.”
