Protests Erupt in Australia Over Israeli President’s Visit
Demonstrators carried Palestinian banners and held signs bearing anti-Israel messages. The gathering also received backing from a number of political figures, including ACT Senator David Pocock and Greens leader Larissa Waters.
Independent MP Zali Steggall took the opportunity to question Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about the type of accountability Australia would demand from Herzog regarding the death of Australian humanitarian worker Zomi Frankcom.
Frankcom was one of several relief personnel from the charity World Central Kitchen who lost their lives in Gaza during an Israeli airstrike in April 2024. The tragedy triggered national mourning and intensified demands for justice throughout Australia.
Albanese stated that he addressed the matter directly with the Israeli leader during their discussions, in addition to what he referred to as “a range of other government concerns.”
He underscored that Australia expects openness from Israel while the inquiries remain ongoing.
“We continue to press for full accountability, including any appropriate criminal charges. We will continue working to ensure transparency and appropriate action,” he added.
Demonstrations have persisted nationwide since Herzog began his four-day visit on Monday, with tensions mounting following confrontations between law enforcement and protesters earlier in the week.
On Monday, thousands marched in various cities, resulting in altercations with police in multiple areas. Videos widely shared online depicted New South Wales (NSW) police officers forcefully detaining Muslim worshippers and pulling them away while they were engaged in prayer during the protest.
