TRNC President Meets UN Chief to Discuss Cyprus Issue

(MENAFN) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Tufan Erhurman met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday at UN headquarters in New York, according to a statement from the TRNC Presidency.

The talks took place in a positive atmosphere and focused on the Cyprus issue as well as broader regional developments. “During the bilateral meeting, views were exchanged on current regional developments, particularly the Cyprus issue, and President Erhurman set out to the secretary-general his four-point methodology regarding the settlement process, which the president had previously made public, as well as providing an update on recent developments relating to the confidence-building measures,” the statement said.

Erhurman emphasized that the unjust and unlawful restrictions imposed on the Turkish Cypriot population should be lifted without further delay.

A UN readout confirmed that Guterres held an introductory meeting with Erhurman, during which both discussed the way forward for the Cyprus issue.

The island of Cyprus has been embroiled in a decades-long dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, despite multiple UN-led diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive settlement.

Ethnic violence in the early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots into enclaves for protection. In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup attempting to unite the island with Greece prompted Türkiye to intervene militarily as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots, leading to the establishment of the TRNC in 1983.
