Romania’s President Names New PM

(MENAFN) Romanian President Nicusor Dan has tapped Adrian Vestea, president of the Brasov County Council, as the country's next prime minister, moving swiftly to fill the leadership vacuum left by his predecessor's abrupt withdrawal.

Dan announced at a press conference Sunday that he had selected Vestea — also serving as vice-president of the National Liberal Party — for the role, after independent candidate Eugen Tomac stepped down from the mandate earlier that morning.

The president expressed strong confidence in the nominee, citing Vestea's track record across multiple tiers of public administration — as a mayor, county council president, and minister — as evidence that he is well-equipped to rise to the challenge.

Vestea accepted the designation with a sober acknowledgement of the difficulties ahead, stating: "I assume this responsibility at a time of political crisis. I know the Romanian state well, and I know from the ground up what people's expectations are, what problems they face, and what needs to be done."

Under Romanian constitutional procedure, Vestea now has ten days to assemble a cabinet and secure a parliamentary vote of confidence to formally take office.

The new nomination was made necessary after Tomac, a close adviser to the president, proved unable to build sufficient support among parliamentary parties to move forward with government formation.

Tomac had been appointed prime minister-designate on June 4, following Romania's parliament passing a no-confidence motion against Ilie Bolojan's government in early May — a vote that forced Bolojan and his entire cabinet to resign.
