IAM Mourns the Passing of Retired General Vice President Edgar M. House

The IAM Union is mourning the passing of retired General Vice President Edgar M. House, a longtime IAM leader whose career with the union spanned more than three decades.

House passed away peacefully on Sept. 20, 2026, at the age of 94. Born June 14, 1932, in Holly Springs, Ark., Edgar lived a life devoted to his family, his community and the working people he represented.

Those who knew House described him as a progressive leader and a true people person, known for his honesty, integrity and genuine commitment to helping others. He served the IAM with distinction and grace, earning the respect of the members and colleagues he worked alongside throughout his career.

House never met a stranger and had a natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He was also a hands-on kind of guy who believed in being present, listening to people and getting involved when his help was needed. His leadership was defined not only by the positions he held, but by the way he treated people and the lasting relationships he built along the way.

“Edgar House dedicated more than three decades of his life to the IAM and to the working people of this union,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “His service helped shape our union and strengthen the IAM’s presence across the South. We are grateful for his many years of service and leadership. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bonnie, his family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working alongside Edgar.”

House joined the IAM in 1966 and dedicated 31 years to serving IAM members in a series of leadership positions. He began his IAM career as a Special Representative in July 1966, serving in that role until June 1970. He was a 71-year IAM member.

He then served as a Grand Lodge Representative from 1970 through 1988, followed by a year as an Administrative Assistant. In July 1989, Edgar was appointed Resident General Vice President, serving there until November 1991.

House then became Southern Territory General Vice President in 1991, serving in that position until his retirement in 1997.

Throughout his years with the IAM, House earned the respect of his colleagues and the members he served. His union career reflected a deep commitment to the IAM and to the people whose livelihoods depended on a strong voice in the workplace.

According to his family, House’s life was centered on love, generosity and devotion to others. He was known for welcoming people into his life, sharing meals and helping others whenever he could. He especially loved children and was generous with those he encountered.
